USS "Jerauld" (APA-174) was a "Haskell"-class
attack transport acquired by theU.S. Navy duringWorld War II for the task of transporting troops to and from combat areas.World War II service
"Jerauld" ("APA-174") was launched under
Maritime Commission contract by Oregon Shipbuilding Co.,Portland, Oregon ,3 November 1944 ; sponsored by Mrs. Gloria Dahlberg; acquired and commissioned atAstoria, Oregon ,28 November 1944 , Comdr R. E. Perry in command. After undergoing shakedown offCalifornia , "Jerauld" sailed fromSeattle, Washington ,5 February 1945 carrying Army flyers and civilian workers toPearl Harbor . She arrived16 February and began 4 weeks of amphibious exercises in theHawaiian Islands .Transporting troops and their equipment to Okinawa
The new
attack transport sailed fromPearl Harbor 15 March withU.S. marines destined forOkinawa . En route she touched at the great American bases atEniwetok andUlithi , arrivingOkinawa 17 April . She remained off the bitterly-contested island for 5 days debarking a Marineantiaircraft battalion and undergoing frequent air attacks before sailing forSaipan 22 April .Operations at Guam, Saipan and Okinawa
"Jerauld" next steamed to
Guadalcanal ; and, after her arrival10 May , she embarked troop units for redeployment toGuam andSaipan . The ship departed Saipan23 June for her second voyage toOkinawa , this time with Army Engineers needed for the construction of all-important airfields on the island. She remained off Okinawa from27 June until6 July when she sailed with more than 250 battle casualties destined for hospitals onSaipan . Jerauld then proceeded toSan Francisco, California , where she arrived26 July .End-of-war “mopping up” operations
The battle-tried transport remained in the
United States until after Japan's surrender, Sailing16 August for thePhilippines , she arrivedManila 6 September and embarked occupation troops. After stopping atLingayen Gulf for additional units she steamed toWakayama 7 October to land occupation soldiers. The ship visited several Japanese ports in support of the operation and made another voyage to the Philippines for troops. She sailed fromNagoya 26 October , embarked returnees in thePhilippines , and steamed by way ofPearl Harbor forSan Diego, California . "Jerauld" then made one additional voyage to the Philippines as part ofOperation Magic Carpet , bringing many combat troops back to the United States.Post-war decommissioning
"Jerauld" then sailed from San Francisco
20 February 1946 via thePanama Canal Zone forNorfolk, Virginia . Arriving11 March , she decommissioned6 May , was returned to theMaritime Commission , and was placed in the Maritime Commission'sNational Defense Reserve Fleet in theJames River, Virginia , where she remained. "Jerauld" was struck from theNavy List on (date unknown) and disposed of (date unknown).Military awards and honors
