Ancient Diocese of Eauze

The former Catholic archdiocese of Eauze, in south-west France, was suppressed in 879 [ [http://www.catholic-hierarchy.org/diocese/de510.html Eauze (Archdiocese) [Catholic-Hierarchy ] ] . The see was moved from Eauze to Auch, the territory becoming part of the diocese of Auch. Eauze was anciently known also as Elusa.

The first mention of a bishop of Eauze is at the Council of Arles (314). The see may have been moved for mainly military reasons, around 850. [ [http://fr.structurae.de/structures/data/index.cfm?id=s0029237] , French language.]
