Bawarij were Indian
corsairs that chasedArab shipping bound forIndia andChina . Laurier, pg. 132] They are mentioned by Ma'sudi as frequenting the pirate den atSocotra andMarco Polo describes them as pirates ofGujarat .Ibn Batuta describes them being warships withoars , fifty rowers, and fifty men-at-arms and wooden roofs to protect againstarrow s and stones.Tabari describes them in an attack uponBasra in 866 CE as having one pilot "(istiyam)", three fire-throwers "(naffatun)", abaker , acarpenter and thirty-ninerower s and fighters making up a complement of forty-five. ship s were unsuited for warlike maneuvers and lacked the sleekprow s orramming capabilities of other contemporary naval units, but were intended to provide forhand -to-hand battles for crew upon boarding.ee also
