Steve Fryer is the high school sports columnist at the "
Orange County Register " and at its high school sports website, ocvarsity.com.He was born in Orange in 1958, and attended
Saddleback High School in Santa Ana, and Cal State Fullerton where he studied news journalism.He began for the "Orange County Register" full-time in the sports department in 1983.
He has been the "Register"'s high school sports columnist since 1990. He has won many awards, most recently a California Interscholastic Federation Champion For Character honor.
He also is a rock music critic at the "Register". Among concerts he has reviewed: the
Rolling Stones ;AC/DC ;The Who ; Rush; Def Leppard; Steve Miller Band; Heart; Doobie Brothers; ZZ Top; John Mellencamp; Neil Young; and Van Halen.He became the center of controversy in August 2008, when he wrote in a concert review about the Sammy Hagar and Scorpions show that "Send Me An Angel" is a "bad ballad." This song had previously made it to the top of International billboard charts.
He also provides video reporting for the ocvarsity.com website, and has been a guest contributor for Fox Sports Network and KOCE.
