Fairfax School is an 11-18 Secondary School in Sutton Coldfield, north Birmingham. The school was established in 1959 and will be celebrating its 50th year in 2009, large celebrations are expected.

The school is a world leader in The Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme and also holds an annual Eisteddfod as well as other arts productions throughout the year. Establishment of the Eisteddfod can be traced back many years to the original foundation headmaster. There is a tradition of student extracurricular activity which may help the secondary School in academic league tables as well as its general reputation on which it thrives. The school is ranked as 18th in the West Midlands.

History

The school's outgoing headmaster and Senior Management Team made the school grant maintained though it has since become a foundation school. Its reputation grew further as well as its exam results beating every comparable school in the Sutton Coldfield. Other notable changes at the top of the school is the retirement of Mrs M Atack (retired 2006) and Mr R Woods (retired 2007). Both members of the senior team had served many years at the school (In particular Mr R Woods who had served 36 years).

Mrs M Atack served as acting head at the school for two terms until a replacement was found in 2006. Mrs S Calvert took over in September 2006.

Sports

Fairfax school is also a very close-knit community, which is due to its academic studies, extensive extracurricular activities and wide variety of sports. Fairfax offers a vast range of sports for both boys and girls, as well as for its physically impaired students. For boys there is Rugby, Cricket, Basketball, Badminton, Swimming, Gym, Rowing, Soft Ball and Athletics. And for girls there is Hockey, Netball, Rounders, Badminton, Rowing, Football, Swimming, Dance, Gym and Athletics. For Fairfax's disabled students there are a great range of fun activities, most notably though are Zone Hockey and the Athletics.

Notably Football and Hockey are not taught at Fairfax to boys.

Rugby

Rugby is a very influential sport at Fairfax and inspires many of its male students to succeed in not only sport, but their education too. Rugby provides confidence and also acts as a great activity for making friends. Rugby teachers are also revered by their students for being great mentors, as well as tutors. Mr Evans is a name known by so many, past and previous students. The current Rugby staff includes Mr Evans, another Mr Evans who has recently joined, and Mr Ravenscroft. Notable past students include James Scaysbrook who has gone on to play for a major Rugby team (Bath).
