Julio Álvarez del Vayo (
Villaviciosa de Odón , Madrid, 1890 -Geneve ,Switzerland , 1975) was a SpanishSocialist politician ,journalist andwriter .He studied
Law at the Universities of Madrid and Valladolid and he did a postdoctoral stay at theLondon School of Economics . He joined theSpanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) very young and he opposed to the collaboration of that party with thedictatorship of Primo de Rivera (1923-1930). He wrote for newspapers "La Nación " ofArgentina , "El Liberal " and "El Sol" ofSpain , and "The Guardian " of Britain. He visited as journalistUnited States , the European fronts duringFirst World War and theSoviet Union . In 1930 he conspired for an armed uprising against theMonarchy . When the Second Republic was proclaimed he was appointedambassador toMexico and to theSoviet Union , and later he was elected member of the Parliament. He followed the revolutionary wing ofLargo Caballero .During the Civil War he hold several political offices on the Republican side: he was twice
minister of Foreign Affairs , delegate toLeague of Nations andcommissar andgeneral of the Army. After the Francoist conquest ofCatalonia and while the majority of the Republican leaders decided to remain inFrance , he returned to the Republican zone and led the last combats against the Francoist troops. He fled on airplane fromMonovar , Alicante.He lived exiled in
Mexico ,United States andSwitzerland . He radicalized his political positions and was expelled from PSOE. He founded Unión Socialista Española, very close to theSpanish Communist Party , which integrated into the Revolutionary Anti-Fascist Patriotic Front (FRAP).Writings
