- West End Slowdown
The West End Slowdown [West End are a local brewer who are one of the sponsors of the event.] is an annual charity
Australian rules football match run by the McGuinness McDermott Foundation to raise funds to combat childhood cancer. The match is held at the end of the regular season, with teams drawn mostly from retired AFL and
SANFL players, augmented with a sprinkling of (mainly local media) celebrities. The players competing are loosely aligned to one of the twoAdelaide -based AFL sides: Adelaide Crows and Port Power. The name "Slowdown" is a play on words to the local football derby between Adelaide and Port Adelaide, which is promoted as a "Showdown". For a gold coin entrance fee spectators enjoy a lighthearted game where entertainment is more the aim than the actual outcome on the scoreboard. Attendance in 2005 was over 30,000.In 2007, the event moved from
Adelaide Oval (the original home of Australian rules football and cricket inSouth Australia ) toAAMI Stadium , the current home of football in South Australia. In total, out of 9 games, Adelaide have won 4 and Port Adelaide have won 5.
