is a Japanese
Nihonga painter, born in Setoda-chō,Hiroshima Prefecture , famous in Japan forSilk Road paintings of dreamydesert landscapes inIran ,Iraq , andChina .In 1952, he graduated from the Tokyo School of Art, and became a disciple of
Maeda Seison .Ikuo also has his career as the president of the university.
A
hibakusha , he produced a series of paintings depicting the introduction ofBuddhism to Japan. Later, he portrayed theA-bomb attack on Hiroshima. He is also active in the preservation of the cultural heritage of the world (for example, theBamiyan Buddhas) and is internationally appreciated for his efforts in this sphere. Hirayama was awarded theOrder of Cultural Merit in 1998.He has a studio in
