Petru Chiril Lucinschi (Russian: Пётр Кириллович Лучинский, "Pyotr Kirillovich Luchinsky"; Ukrainian: Петро Кирилович Лучинський, "Petro Kyrylovych Luchynsky") (born
27 January 1940 ) was electedMoldova 's secondpresident in 1996. He served until 2001 when he called an earlyelection , and the Parliament voted in favour ofVladimir Voronin .From 1971, Lucinschi was a member of the Executive Committee (politbureau) of the Central Committee of the Communist Party in
Moldavian SSR . He was the only native Bessarabian in the leadership of Moldavian Communist Party at that time, when the leadership of Moldavian SSR was almost completely in the hands of people from outside the republic orTransnistria ns [Mihail Bruhis - "Rusia, România şi Basarabia", Universitas, Chişinău 1992, page 314] .From 1978 to 1989, Lucinschi was part of the Central Committee of the Communist Party in
Tajikistan . Upon his return to Moldova in 1989, he became first secretary of the Communist Party of Moldova.In early 1991, he again left Moldova and went to Moscow where he joined the Central Ruling Body of the Soviet Union, becoming secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Soviet Union. Speaker of the Parliament of Moldova 1993-1997.Lucinschi is married to Antonina, a retired schoolteacher, and has two sons, Sergiu and Chiril.
