propaganda inKharkov andSt.Petersburg in the 1870s. She was close to theZemlya i volya . After its split in 1879, Kovalskaya joined theBlack Repartition . In 1880, together withNikolai Schedrin , she took part in organizing theWorker's Union of Southern Russia inKiev , for which she would be sentenced to an open-endedkatorga in 1881. In 1882, Kovalskaya was transferred to theKara katorga . In 1903-1917, she was inexile inSwitzerland andFrance , where she would join theSocialist-Revolutionary Party .In 1918, Kovalskaya became a research worker at Petrograd Historical Revolutionary Archive and member of the editorial board of the "Katorga and Exile" magazine (Каторга и ссылка).
