Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation

The Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation (DGYLF) is a faith-based 501(c)(3) organization started by former Washington Redskins cornerback Darrell Green. The Foundation's stated mission is to "help children develop into leaders who positively influence their families and communities" [1]. Specifically, the Foundation runs after-school and summer programs for elementary school age children that focus academics, friendship, and values. The DGYLF has no formal relationship with the local public school system, but focuses on teaching children age 5 to 11 in reading, writing, math, and English. Funding for their activities comes from other foundations, corporations, individuals, churches, the government, and special events.

Criticism

The foundation came under criticism from Youthtoday.org in 2003, when their article by Jim Meyers questioned the foundations cost and efficiency. [1] Charitynavigator.org lists the foundation with a two out of four rating in organizational efficiency. It also lists administrative expenses as being 17.8%, with fundraising expenses at 8.1%.[2]

According to the YouthToday.org article, Internal Revenue Service figures show costs of more than $13,000 per child that the foundation helps. When the foundation’s overall spending is taken into account, the cost per child rises to more than $34,000. This compares to the $1,000 a year per child spent by the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program.[2]

Several years later, the Foundation's program expenses are still excessively high. Based on 2005, 2006 and 2007 990 tax forms, all expenses (program, management/administrative and fundraising expenses) exceed the revenue generated.
