John P. Reese

John P. Reese

John P. Reese (born 1953) is a U.S.-based money manager and financial columnist who writes for Forbes.com and Real Money. He has developed several proprietary stock screening tools, which he terms "Guru Strategies", each of which is based on the published investing philosophy of a different famous stock investor. Reese is also the founder and chief executive officer of Validea.com, a website that allows users to use his screening tools, and Validea Capital Management, an SEC-registered investment advisory firm. John Reese is considered an expert in automated stock selection and holds two U.S. patents for his automated stock analysis inventions.

Education

John Reese attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and graduated with a degree in electrical engineering in 1974. At MIT he was a member of the school’s artificial intelligence laboratory. In 1979 he received his Master’s in Business Administration from Harvard Business School.

Published Work

Reese is a regular columnist for the financial websites Forbes.com and RealMoney.com. In his columns, he usually writes about stocks that have passed one or more of his "Guru Strategy" quantitative models. In 2007, he began writing for Globes, an Israeli financial daily newspaper.

Reese is also author of the book, “The Market Gurus: Stock Investing Strategies You Can Use From Wall Street's Best” (Dearborn, 2002). The book examines the strategies of eight different famous stock market investors -- Peter Lynch, Benjamin Graham, William O'Neil, Warren Buffett, David Dreman, Martin Zweig, Kenneth Fisher, and James O'Shaughnessy -- and explains how the computer models that Reese developed based on their strategies work.

Validea.com and Validea Capital Management

In 1997, John Reese founded Validea.com. Initially, the site served as a report card for financial pundits, monitoring how well the recommendations of dozens of investment columnists and personalities fared. Eventually, that performance-tracking product was sold off to another firm and the site’s focus was changed to feature Reese's "guru-based" stock-selection models. As of September 2007, Validea.com featured models based on published books or papers from 11 different famous investors with long-term track records of success and quantifiable investment strategies. Those investors include: Peter Lynch, Benjamin Graham, William O'Neil, Warren Buffett, David Dreman, Martin Zweig, Kenneth Fisher, James O'Shaughnessy, John Neff, Joseph Piotroski, and The Motley Fool. Reese is the Chief Executive Officer of Validea.com.

In 2004, Reese also co-founded Validea Capital Management, LLC. He is currently the CEO of the firm, which manages money for high net worth individuals and institutions using his guru-based computer models.

Reese is also a partner with Validea Hedge Fund, which also uses his quantitative guru-based models to invest clients' money.
