Sport in Tunisia

The Tunisian "national" sport is football (soccer). The most-watched sports in France are football (soccer), handball, basketball, rugby union, volley-ball.

Sport is encouraged in school, and local sports clubs receive financial support from the local governments.

The national stadium is the Stade de Rades.

Rugby

Tunisia is one of Africa's best rugby union nations, currently with 10,698 registered players (IRB statistics). The national team has participated in the Africa Cup numerous times, and will once again be looking to qualify for their first Rugby World Cup in 2010.

Handball

There are over 10,000 licensed handball players in Tunisia, and the handball national team is one of the most watched and supported along with the football.

Volleyball

Volleyball is also a popular team sport with more than 4,500 licensed players (2005 statistics).

Tennis

Tunisia holds a tournament Tunis Open.

Cycling

Tunisia holds an annual cycling race Tour de Tunisie, which takes place each January.

Pétanque
