USS "Redpoll" (AMS-57/YMS-294) was a YMSsub|135 acquired by the
U.S. Navy for the task of removing mines that had been placed in the water to prevent ships from passing.Operational history
"Redpoll" was laid down as "YMS-294",
10 June 1943 byAssociated Shipbuilders , Lake Union,Seattle, Washington ; launched11 August 1943 ; sponsored by Miss Joanne Swanson; and commissioned11 September 1943 .In the
Puget Sound area through the fall of1943 , "YMS-294" moved south toSan Pedro, California , in January1944 and operated out of that port until April. On the 21st, themotor minesweeper steamed west and arrived atPearl Harbor on1 May . Thence, she completed a run toMidway Island and back and in June she continued on to theMarshall Islands .There through the end of the war, she engaged in patrol operations, convoy escort duty and minesweeping operations principally out of
Kwajalein andEniwetok . In December1945 , she returned toHawaii ; remained there until February; then, ordered inactivated, got underway for theU.S. East Coast . She arrived atCharleston, South Carolina , in late June, received new orders, and in September retraced her route back to theGulf of Mexico for duty in the8th Naval District . On12 November she was decommissioned and placed in service atNew Orleans, Louisiana . The following month she assumedU.S. Naval Reserve training duties atHouston, Texas .Named "Redpoll" and redesignated "AMS-57",
1 September 1947 , she was recommissioned effective20 November 1950 , but until1952 remained in the8th Naval District as a reservetraining ship . In May1952 , she departedLake Charles, Louisiana , and steamed back to the Atlantic coast. Assigned to the5th Naval District for the next 5 years, she operated out ofNorfolk, Virginia , for 2 years, then, in June1954 , shifted toYorktown, Virginia , for duty with the Mine Warfare School.On
7 February 1955 "Redpoll" was redesignated "MSCO-57" and in October1957 she was ordered toChattanooga, Tennessee , for reserve training duty. She arrived at her new homeport2 November and 6 days later,8 November , was again decommissioned and placed in service. A little over 1-1/2 years later she completed her last tour. She was placed out of service and struck from theNavy list 1 July 1959 .References
