Martin Stuart Brown has been playing hockey since he was 10 years of age. All throughout his career he has played for Doncaster Hockey Club, in South Yorkshire, and was in the one of the key junior players in the first ever Doncaster 7th team. In that year the 7th team had its most successful year and easily won the league. Martin then proceeded to play at that level for 2 years. At the age of 12 Martin Brown was dropped from the U13 South Yorkshire final squad, but with a a lot of hard training and a bit of luck he was then selected to play for the North East of England (NEE) U13 squad. After been selected for the NEE squad he was asked to attend the last Yorkshire U13 trail and was also selected for that squad as well, which went on to win the divisional cup. After this Martin obtained his first sponsorship from the hockey brand Mercian.
Martin has continued to play at this very high standard playing for the North East of England U14, U15, and currently trailing for the U17 at which he has still two years to play at that level. He also played for Yorkshire U15 but was not selected for the Yorkshire U16 team.
Most successful moment
Martins most successful moment in his hockey career to date is when he was in the North East U15 last year at the regional tournament. Defender Martin Brown from Hall Cross School joined the rest of the side at Manchester as rank outsiders for the title, and in their opening match in torrential rain they slipped to a 4-2 defeat against the Midlands despite a number of good saves from GK Pendlebury. A bright start saw the North East take a 2 goal lead against the North West, but in a game marred by controversial umpiring they had to settle for a 4 all draw.
Only one point and 8 goals conceded did not bode well for the rest of the weekend, but the second day brought better fortunes as first the South East were dispatched 2-0, before a superb team performance saw off the South West 4-1.
The Sunday brought an early morning match against the East who had their England under 16 goalkeeper in top form, but 2 second half goals secured a third victory. This meant that the winners of the final match against the West would take the title, while a draw would hand the spoils to the Midlands.
A tight first half saw no goals with Martin Brown, who improved throughout the tournament, outstanding in defence. The second half exploded in to life as the West took the lead only for the North East to respond within a minute. With 10 minutes left the West again took the lead, but once again the North East hit back within a minute And it was a superb individual effort three minutes from time which secured a 3-2 victory and the North East's first ever title at any age group.
