Szczepan Ścibor (
December 13 1903 inUniejow ,Poland –August 7 1952 inWarsaw , Poland) was a Polish soldier, pilot, and patriot.It has not been established what he was doing early years of his life. Most probably, he fought in the
Polish September Campaign and later escaped toGreat Britain .In 1940, Ścibor became member of the
No. 305 Polish Bomber Squadron ( _pl. 305 Dywizjon Bombowy "Ziemi Wielkopolskiej im. Marszałka Józefa Piłsudskiego") He was pilot of aVickers Wellington . In 1941, his machine crashed during a mission nearCharleroi inBelgium . He managed to survive and found his way toBrussels where after hiding for nine days he was caught by the Nazi Germans and sent to a POW camp.Liberated by the British in 1945, Ścibor at first went to Great Britain, but in March 1946 decided to return to his native country. There, he took command of 7th Air Bomb Regiment in
Łęczyca and in August 1947 he became commander of the famousPolish Air Force Academy inDęblin .He was arrested on
August 9 1951 and wrongly accused of being a British spy. Ścibor was for many months tortured, then sentenced to death. He was charged with for his service in the Polish Air Forces (Polskie Siły Powietrzne) fighting alongside the allies. His execution took place onAugust 7 1952 in the infamous CommunistMokotów Prison inWarsaw .In 1956 – following political changes in Poland – Ścibor was officially "rehabilitated" posthumously. His symbolic tomb is located at Warsaw's
