The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) is part of the United Nations Secretariat and is responsible for the follow-up to the major United Nations Summits and Conferences, as well as services to the Economic and Social Council and the Second and Third Committees of the United Nations General Assembly.cite web|url=http://www.un.org/esa/desa/ousg/#bioSection| title=About Mr. Sha Zukang, Under-Secretary-General|accessdate=2007-09-21]

In 2002, due to the increased burden of servicing an increasing number of conferences including the Millennium Declaration, the Department was expanded and gained a new office of an Assistant Secretary-General.UN document |docid=A-57-387 |type=Document |body=General Assembly |session=57 |document_number=387 |highlight=rect_503,360_913,1134 |page=22 |accessdate=2007-09-21|date=2 October 2002|title=Strengthening of the United Nations: an agenda for further change] UNDESA is headquartered in New York, but has an important secondary office in Rome (Italy), managing the coordination of Italian Fellowship and JPO Programmes.

The Department has been headed by Sha Zukang since 1 July 2007.

Due to the importance the United Nations attaches to economic and social affairs, the Department contains several important Divisions. These include the Development Policy Division, the Division for Sustainable Development, the Division for Social Development, the Division for Public Administration, the Statistics Division, and the Population Division.
