Montpelier is a village in St. Helena Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 214 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Montpelier was the Parish Seat from 1812-1832.[1]

Geography

Montpelier is located at 30°40′47″N 90°39′17″W / 30.67972°N 90.65472°W / 30.67972; -90.65472 (30.679697, -90.654585)[2].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.9 square miles (4.8 km²), of which 1.9 square miles (4.8 km²) is land and 0.53% is water.

Demographics

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 214 people, 98 households, and 54 families residing in the village. The population density was 114.8 inhabitants per square mile (44.4/km²). There were 111 housing units at an average density of 59.5 per square mile (23.0/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 58.88% White, 40.19% African American, and 0.93% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.34% of the population.

There were 98 households out of which 21.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% were married couples living together, 4.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.9% were non-families. 39.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 24.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.18 and the average family size was 3.04.

In the village the population was spread out with 19.2% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 28.0% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 86.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.1 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $22,625, and the median income for a family was $36,875. Males had a median income of $35,313 versus $18,125 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,704. About 17.6% of families and 22.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 32.3% of those under the age of eighteen and 31.6% of those sixty five or over.

Education

Montpelier and all of St. Helena Parish are served by the St. Helena Parish School System. Zoned campuses include St. Helena Central Elementary School (Grades PK-4), St. Helena Central Middle School (Grades 5-8), and St. Helena Central High School (Grades 9-12).
