Ramsey Station served the town of Ramsey, Isle of Man. It was the northern terminus and the headquarters of the Manx Northern Railway.

Description and history

The station opened to traffic on start date|1879|9|23 and closed on end date|1968|9|6 (the whole of the network was closed for the year 1966). The station building was an Italianate one-storey structure and unlike any other railway building on the island. It was accompanied by a stone built locomotive shed, corrugated iron carriage shed, water tower, etc..

At one time there was a branch before the station that looped past the northern side of the goods yard and on to the harbourside, terminating near the market square. This branch was used exclusively for wagons carrying ore from Foxdale Mines to awaiting ships for transportation to the UK and Ireland.

In later years the station canopy, which was adjoined to the building and of wooden construction, developed a distinct sag. The station never had full sized platforms, but there were lower level ones reaching as far as the bottom running board of the coaches. The station also had a bay platform. After closure, it remained intact but the site was flattened in 1975 to make way for what is now Ramsey Bakery.

ervices

Trains originally ran to St. John's, where there was a junction with the Isle of Man Railway's Peel to Douglas line. Some trains continued on to Douglas, more frequently after the Manx Northern was taken over by the Isle of Man Railway in 1905. Some services terminated at Kirk Michael.
