Israel Singer

Israel Singer (1943 in New York City) was from 2001 to 2007 secretary general of the World Jewish Congress (WJC).

Life

He grew up as the son of Austrian refugees in Brooklyn and taught political science at the university of New York and from 1969 to 1971 political theories at the policy-institution at the Barllan University in Israel.

In 1987, WJC leaders Israel Singer and Elan Steinberg, warned "Austrians that if they elected a former Nazi as president they would experience six difficult years. This was perceived as a threat against all Austrians." [ [http://www.ajc.org/site/apps/nl/content2.asp?c=ijITI2PHKoG&b=838459&ct=1054691 Publications - American Jewish Committee ] ] As chairman of the World Jewish Restitution Organization (WJRO), he managed proceedings to assist Holocaust survivors and fought worldwide about the heritage of the Holocaust-victims. He also negotiated with Germany and Austria about annuity and compensation for survivors.

In October 2001 he was appointed chairman of the World Jewish Congress (WJC). In 2002 he was elected president of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany, the "Claims Conference". In June 2002 he was appointed chairman of the International Jewish Committee for Interreligious Consultations (IJCIC).
