ARC-ECRIS [P. Suominen, T. Ropponen and H. Koivisto, First results with the yin-yang type electron cyclotron resonance ion source, Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment [http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.nima.2007.05.324 Volume 578, Issue 2, 1 August 2007, Pages 370-378] ] [] is an Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source based on arc-shaped coils unlike the conventional [R. Geller, Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Sources and ECR Plasmas, Institute of Physics Publishing, London (1996) ISBN 9780750301077] ECRIS which bases on a multipole magnet inside a solenoid magnets (usually hexapole+solenoids). First time the arc-shaped coils were used already in 1960's in fusion physics experiements, for example at
LLNL ,USA (MFTF , Baseball II [http://www.llnl.gov/timeline/1970s/Highlights/baseball.html] ,...) and later in Japan (GAMMA10 ,...). In 2006 the JYFL ion source group [ [http://www.jyu.fi/science/laitokset/fysiikka/en/research/accelerator/ionsources/ JYFL ion source group www pages] ] designed, constructed and tested similar plasma trap to produce highly charged heavy ion beams. The first tests were promising and showed that a stable plasma can be confined in an arc-coil magnetic field structure (see references).References
