United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 4.9square mile s (12.7km² ), of which, 4.9 square miles (12.7 km²) of it is land and 0.20% is water.The most common soil is Eastwood series, which has 3 to 10 inches of brown very fine sandy loam over 20 inches of red clay. As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 2,679 people, 1,087 households, and 709 families residing in the town. Thepopulation density was 545.2 people per square mile (210.7/km²). There were 1,247 housing units at an average density of 253.8/sq mi (98.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 49.42% White, 49.76% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.82% of the population.There were 1,087 households out of which 30.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.0% were married couples living together, 19.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 33.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.07.
In the town the population was spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 23.7% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 22.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 82.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.9 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $20,406, and the median income for a family was $28,295. Males had a median income of $29,375 versus $20,278 for females. The
