Between
1958 and1962 , Leo Runcible works in thereal estate field. On learning that Walt Dombrosio, his neighbour, has had anAfrican-American visitor, potential purchasers refuse to buy one of his properties. In retaliation, Runcible tells the police about Dombrosio'sdrunk driving , leading to the loss of the latter'sdriving license . His wife Sherry drives him to work, eventually securing a job working alongside her husband, but Walt quits his job, and sometime later, he rapes his wife.At the same time, Runcible has found what he believes to be
Neanderthal remains inCarquinez ,Marin County , and envisages rising property prices due to incipientarchaeologist interest. However, Dombrosio turns out to have planted the human remains there. They are the skeletal remnants of the 'chuppers', who developed mouthmalformation as a result of local environmental pollution withindrinking water . Sherry is now pregnant, fearingfetal abnormality , and wants anabortion due to theteratogenic qualities of the water supply, which her husband refuses.
