- Walther Spielmeyer
Walther Spielmeyer (
April 23 ,1879 -February 6 ,1935 ) was a Germanneuropathologist who was a native ofDessau . He studied medicine at theUniversity of Halle underEduard Hitzig (1838-1907), and in 1906 went toFreiburg , where he was an assistant toAlfred Hoche (1865-1943). At the suggestion ofEmil Kraepelin (1856-1926), he succeededAlois Alzheimer (1864-1915) as director of the "Anatomisches Laboratorium der Psychiatrischen und Nervenklivik" inMunich . At Munich he worked withFranz Nissl (1860-1919) andFelix Plaut (1877-1940).Spielmeyer is remembered for his research of
peripheral nervous system injuries, and his specialized study of disturbedbrain function caused by temporary circulation problems. Among his written works was the 1922 "Histopathologie des Neurvensystems", an influential book concerning thehistopathology of thenervous system . This book is known for its excellent illustrations.
