Bruns was also a teacher and head basketball and baseball coach at Msgr. McClancy High School in East Elmhurst, Queens, New York. His 1971 McClancy Crusaders, team led by senior Leroy Charles (younger brother of standout Fordham University star Kenny Charles) and junior Pat Kammerer went to the NY CHSAA City Championships only to lose to LaSalle Academy in the City finals played at Rose Hill at Fordham.

He was also the first high school coach to use "designated runners" as position players in organized baseball nationally, (borrowing the idea from Oakland A's owner Charlie Finley who hired the first ever "designated runner/base stealer" in organized baseball, former world class sprinter Herb Washington).
