"The King of Rock and Roll" was Little Richard's second album for Reprise Records, a follow-up album that in part kept the swamp rock sound, but was also comprised almost exclusively of cover versions. Despite featuring contemporary tracks by such artists as Three Dog Night and The Rolling Stones, and a mock braggadocio title track that referenced Tom Jones, Tina Turner, Sly and the Family Stone and Aretha Franklin, amongst others, the album failed to take with the public and didn't chart.
