Shankar Jaikishan

Shankar Jaikishan (also credited as Shankar - Jaikishan, Shanker Jaikishan or Shankar - Jaikishen) was a duo of prolific music composers who worked in the Indian film industry. The team composed music for over 150 Bollywood movies. They were the highest paid music directors in their time. Fact|date=February 2007

Biography

The team of Shankar Jaikishan consisted of Shankarsingh Raghuwanshi and Jaikishan Dayabhai Panchal. Shankar (October 15, 1922 - April 26, 1987) was born in Punjab and trained under the famous Husnlal Bhagatram. He later settled down in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India. Jaikishan (1929 - September 12, 1971) hails from Vansada, Gujarat, India. Before the duo met, Jaikishan worked as a carpenter. They got filmfare awards for the music of chori chori, "Anari", Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai and Mera Naam Joker. They won first filmfare award for music for the film chori chori. They both worked as music assistant with Dattaram for Raj Kapoor's first directed film Aag. The film flopped. But soon after, when Raj Kapoor made Barsaat, he gave break to Shankar-Jaikishan. Barsaat was a musical super hit. The duo never look back. Before the era of Shankar-Jaikishan, there were the legendary musicians like Naushad, Anil Biswas, C. Ramachandra, Husnlal-Bhagatram etc. But with the arrival of Shankar-Jaikishan the new era of melodious and popular music started. Shankar-Jaikishan had a big competition with S.D.Burman, O.P. Nayyar, Roshan, Madan Mohan and Ravi. This was the first big successful musical duo in bollywood. After Shankar-Jaikishan, two more duos arose, namely Kalyanji-Anandji and Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Laxmikant was a great fan of Jaikishan.
