Alston G. Dayton

Alston G. Dayton was a Republican politician from West Virginia who served as a
United States Representative. Congressman Dalton was born in Philippi, West Virginia, then in Virginia on October 18, 1857. He served in the 54th, 55th, 56th, 57th, 58th, and 59th U. S. Congresses.

He studied law after graduating from West Virginia University at Morgantown, West Virginia in June 1878. He was admitted to the bar in that year and entered practice in Philippi. He received an appointment to fill an unexpired term as the prosecuting attorney of Upshur County, West Virginia in 1879. He followed this term by serving as prosecuting attorney for Barbour County, West Virginia from 1882 to 1886.

In 1894 he won election as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth and to the five succeeding Congresses serving from March 4 1895, until his resignation March 16 1905, to accept a judicial position. He received an appointment as United States district judge for the northern district of West Virginia on March 5 1905. He served until his death in Battle Creek, Michigan on July 30 1920. He was buried in Fraternity Cemetery in Phillipi.
