Istvan Bokros

Istvan Bokros

Istvan Bokros (b. Budapest 1923- d. Sopron 1987) Hungarian architect who practiced mainly in the modern and early post modernist styles.

Life

Bokros was trained at the Budapest Academy of Applied arts and started practice in the late 1940s. He was highly sought after during the post war era when many housing developments were built around Budapest. In the 1980s he received some important commissions such as for the Duna Plaza Hotel on Belgrad rakpart and other buildings around the city, especially office buildings. This he executed with an unusual postmodernist flair for the time, incorporating elements reminiscent of Hundertwasser into his buiildings. His influence still remains strong in Hungary, particularly in the work of architects like Imre Makovecz who can be considered his heir.
