Matt Cates (born Matthew Robert Cates,
September 18 ,1951 ), is an AmericanVoice Actor . Cates began his career inradio in the 1970s, in his hometown ofSaint Joseph, Missouri at KUSN, a station up for sale at the time of his hiring. As a result of staff attrition, and despite his lack of formalbroadcast training, he eventually took on the roles ofDisk Jockey , Production Director,Talk Show host, and News Director. He moved on to another local outlet,KKJO , where he hosted the station's morning talk program and polished his writing and production skills -- often voicing all the roles in a single project viamulti-tracking andoverdubbing . In 1982, he moved to theSan Francisco Bay Area , where he continued his work in radio production, often hosting mid-day and afternoon-drive programs, well into the 1990s. His last regular broadcast position was asNews Director of KKIS,Concord, California . While at KKIS, he began performing independentvoice-over work, and has since utilized his many character voices in nationally-airedradio &television commercials , as well asmultimedia software . He voiced the role of theRobot Pilot on Deep Earth Exploration, amotion simulator dark ride atMGM Grand Adventures Theme Park in Las Vegas. He has more recently made a few minor on-screen appearances. Cates is a former Chairman of theScreen Actors Guild Conservatory (San Francisco Branch), and currently serves the union as Council Member-at-large.
