Harold Hume was a prominent horticulturalist in the American South and the Interim President of the University of Florida from 1947 until 1948. He was affectionately known as the "Grand Old Man of Agriculture."

Education

Hume was born in Canada in 1875 and was raised there, attending Ontario Agricultural College before moving on to Iowa State College where he earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees in science.

In 1904, Hume moved further south, working as a botanist in Lake City, Florida at the old Florida College of Agriculture. He joined the faculty of UF in 1930 and was appointed dean of the College of Agriculture, becoming the provost for agriculture in 1943.

University of Florida Presidency

Hume was appointed interim president in 1947 and continued to serve as dean for the College of Agriculture consecutively. He was known for spending ten hours a day in his office, keeping up with his duties to the College of Agriculture as well as the office of President. He would spend his lunch hours talking to faculty and students alike.

Post-presidency

After his term ended in 1948, Hume continued his work with agriculture and went on to be named chairman of the administrative committee of the Inter-American Institute of Agricultural Sciences. He was given an honorary doctor of science degree from Clemson University.

Hume retired from his position as provost for the School of Agriculture on June 30, 1949, moving on to write books and articles for his favorite field.

Doctor Hume died four months after his 90th birthday, on October 10, 1965.

Hume Hall was named for him, and later razed to make room for the Honors Residential College at Hume Hall, which opened in 2002.
