Hackney Canal

Hackney Canal

The Hackney Canal was a 5/8 mile long canal that ran from the River Teign to the Newton AbbotKingsteignton road. Its construction was undertaken by Lord Clifford in order to carry clay. The canal opened on 17 March 1843. It had a single lock where it joined the river that could take boats onto the canal in pairs, the boats being up to 54 feet by 14 feet. In 1844 the South Devon Railway built a bridge over the canal, with the Teignmouth Harbour Commissioners retaining John Rennie to among other things make sure that the bridge over the canal was large enough to allow boat traffic to continue.

The canal ceased to be used in 1928.
