NTCU Fairprice Venture

Bemco Australia has played a pivotal role as the consolidator in a food chain to Singapore by addressingthe normal export hurdles through a partnership with one of Singapore’s largest supermarket chains,
NTUC Fairprice.

Bemco is continuing to export and promote Australian foods in Singapore following the September 2003 signing of an extension and expansion of a Memorandum of Understanding between NFIS Ltd and NTUC Fairprice to extend the concept of an ‘Australian Pavilion’ in NTUC’s supermarkets.

"The Australian Pavilion concept was so popular and successful that Fairprice was keen to extend the concept into some of their other larger stores," said Australian Trade Minister, Mark Vaile, at the MoU signing.

A further three Australian Pavilion sites have been established in Fairprice supermarkets and two more are under development. Smaller ‘Australian Bays’ are being extended into other Fairprice supermarkets around Singapore. In addition some Australian product lines, trialed at the Australian Pavilions, are now available to other supermarkets depending on consumer demographics and demand.

Sales of manufactured Australian food products have exceeded AUD $5 million since the partnership with NTUC Fairprice began in 2001. Over 200 Australian manufacturers/food suppliers, mostly small to medium businesses, have been involved in the export of more than 1,300 product lines to the initiative, and there has been a pleasing level of publicity and goodwill generated from the program both in Australia and Singapore.

Bemco is now drawing on its experience in managing the NTUC Fairprice Australian Pavilions in Singapore by establishing a direct relationship with selected retailers in other target Asian markets, commencing with Thailand. An MOU has been enacted with Thailand retail chain Villamarket.

Villamarket is keen to use its relationship with Bemco and a network of Australian suppliers to establish competitive features based on different products, themes and marketing strategies, rather than by dictating and controlling supplier terms through a dominant market share. The Thailand initiative will involve the creation of purpose built display units for the promotion of Australian brands in up to nine categories, including; snacks, confectionery, breakfast cereals, health foods, UHT milk, biscuits, quick and easy meals, wine and beer and beverages (juices and health drinks).
