Quarters A, Brooklyn Navy Yard was the residence of the commander of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. It was home to Commodore Matthew Perry at the time of his opening of Japan. Contrary to a popular misconception, Quarters A is not located on Admiral's Row, it is actually located in Vinegar Hill.
It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1974.[citation|title=PDFlink| [http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NHLS/Text/74001252.pdf National Register of Historic Places Inventory-Nomination: Quarters A] |318 KB|author=Benjamin Levy and Blanche Higgins|date=November 13, 1973|publisher=National Park Service and PDFlink| [http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NHLS/Photos/74001252.pdf "Accompanying photos, from 1963 and 1973"] |2.20 MB] ]References
