Ruy Ohtake

Ruy Ohtake is an architect born in January 27, 1938, in the neighbourhood of Móoca, São Paulo, Brazil.

History

Son of Japanese artist Tomie Ohtake, Ruy Ohtake is known for its dynamic and unusual architectural designs. Some fine examples of his projects are the half-moon-shaped Hotel Unique [ [http://www.hotelunique.com.br/splashpage/ Hotel Unique webpage] ] (considered by architecture pundit Paul Goldberger one of the seven wonders of the modern world), the Hotel Renaissance building, and commercial building Edifício Santa Catarina at Avenida Paulista - all three located in the city of São Paulo. Ohtake is also famous for the design of the Cultural Institute Thomie Ohtake and the commercial building next to it.

He majored in Architecture in 1960 at the University of São Paulo.

Personal life

Ohtake got married twice: to Brazilian actress Célia Helena, who died in 1997, and to architect Silvia Vaz. He has got two children, Elisa and Rodrigo [ [http://veja.abril.com.br/vejasp/270705/perfil.html "Cores, curvas e concreto"] , published in Veja magazine, retrieved 4 Sept 2007] .
