Liverpool, Crosby and Southport Railway

Liverpool, Crosby and Southport Railway

The Liverpool, Crosby and Southport Railway (LC&SR) opened in 1848. Its original Liverpool terminus was at Waterloo; the line was later extended to Tithebarn Street which later became Liverpool Exchange station, by 1850. The original Southport terminus was at Eastbank Street, until the current Chapel Street station opened in 1851.

The LC&SR became part of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, who electrified the line on 5 April 1904. The Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway amalgamated with the London and North Western Railway on 1 January 1922 and in turn was Grouped into the London, Midland and Scottish Railway in 1923. Nationalisation followed in 1948 and in 1978 the line became part of the Merseyrail Network's Northern Line (operated by British Rail until privatised in 1995).
