Security phase

Security phase

A Security Phase (SP), sometimes capitalized and sometimes not, is a designation made by the United Nations regarding the security of a certain area or country, which entails different procedures for United Nations personnel, such as the requirement for Security Clearances, the need for communication equipment, etc.

Five phases exist:
* Phase I: Precautionary (e.g. Nairobi). Staff are required to apply for a Security Clearance and follow certain procedures on arrival and departure.
* Phase II: Restricted Movement (e.g. Peshawar. Staff are required to follow enhanced security procedureds, especially in terms of communication equipment.
* Phase III: Relocation (e.g. Darfur). Staff are not allowed to have their dependants live with them, and strict security procedures are in place.
* Phase IV: Emergency Operations (e.g. Baghdad). Only emergency staff may travel there.
* Phase V: Evacuation (e.g. Mogadisho). No staff may travel there except under extremely special circumstances.
