Bénigne d'Auvergne de Saint-Mars was a French prison governor in the late 17th and early 18th century. He is best known as the keeper of the Man in the Iron Mask. According to letters written by M. de St.-Mars to various officials and ministers of France, he had in in his custody a prisoner of State, whom he carried with him from "Pinerolo" to the "Iles de Lerins", and later to the "Bastille". The Prisoner was not in his custody during the time that he was governor of "Exiles"; a period of seven years.
Jan 1665-Apr 25, 1681 he was the Officer-in-Charge of the "donjon" (the main tower) of the fortress Pinerolo, ("Pignerol," 40 kilometers WSW of Turin, Italy) then belonging to France.
Apr 1681-Jan 13, 1687 he acted as governor of the fortified castle "Exiles."
Apr 30, 1687-Apr 8, 1698 he was governor of the two islands Sainte Marguerite and Saint Honorat in the gulf of Cannes (these islands are called today "Iles de Lerins".)
Sep 18, 1698-Sep 18, 1708 (the date of his death) he was governor of the Bastille in Paris.
