The gun was designed by the French arms manufacturer "Forges et Acieries de la Marine et Homecourt à Saint Chamond".

Operators included Mexico and Israel. The latter purchased several dozens of pieces from Mexico in 1948 and used them in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. Because of their Mexican origin, the guns were known in Israel as Cucaracha.
