Faulkes Telescope Project

Faulkes Telescope Project

The Faulkes Telescope Project is supported by Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network (LCOGTN) and Dill Faulkes Educational Trust. It provides access to the Faulkes Telescopes (North and South) for schools and groups involved with education in the UK. The project also provides educational materials, astronomy video tutorials, online astronomy training, and astronomy news.

Robotic Telescopes

LCOGTN operates two research sized robotic telescopes. They are: Faulkes Telescope North in Hawaii and Faulkes Telescope South in Australia. The telescopes are made available to teachers and their students from schools and amateur astronomical societies from United Kingdom, Poland and Russia. Students can run their own 29 minute long real-time observational sessions on one of the telescope, remotely controlling it by Internet connection.Observation time must be booked before by registered user on the WWW page of the project. These telescopes are the largest robotic telescopes in the world available for schools to control in real time.

The project was the winner of the 2008 Sir Arthur Clarke Award in the category of Achievement in Education.

The Faulkes Telescope Projects in cooperation with Hands-On Universe runs a few student observing projects such as supernovae observations.
