Durham Miners Heritage Centre
The heritage centre is run by the Durham Miners Heritage Group and is located at Nevilles Cross on the outskirts of Durham City in the north east of England. It has a display of mining memorabilia and an exhibition of art. Secretary John Kitching, founder member of the Brandon & Byshottles Parish Archive and the Browney Banner Group, says one of the main reasons for the display is to educate the next generation of children about the county’s mining past and to give opportunities to research mining history, especially local school groups in the area and visitors to the historic City of Durham. The heritage centre plans to stage art workshops in 2008 and intends to provide training in the workplace for the unemployed. These would give opportunities to learn customer care and welcoming skills and to interpret the exhibition for visitors.
On display at the museum are mining pit lamps, tools used in the mining trade and a selection of art by former miner and artist Mr. Ron Gray of Meadowfield. A computer facility was recently added to the centre to show visitors photographs and there is also a section of books on mining.
