- Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque Resort
The
Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque Resort was constructed in 1993. Designed by the Tenerife-born architectAndrés Piñeiro , the hotel was first planned as a large 4* investment, but the idea of a 5* luxury establishment soon won over, marking the beginning of 5* developments in the now exclusiveCosta Adeje region. The hotel has soon become a landmark in the south part of the island of Tenerife. Originally constructed in the midst of a semi desert, the hotel was the first large project of Andrés Piñeiro, launching his career as an architect of luxury hotels around the world, [J.F.F.Belda, Revista Digital San Borondón,"Tres modelos de arquitectura hotelera en Canarias", http://www.sanborondon.info/index2.php?option=com_content&do_pdf=1&id=794] . The style that predominates in the establishment is a mixture between a typical Canarian Village, a Venetian plaza and a botanical garden with ponds, springs and waterfalls. The hotel is built directly on the sea front of the Atlantic Ocean, on the Bahia del Duque beach.
The hotel occupies 100 000m², of which 63 000m² are gardens. A few of the 5 swimming pools join together to form cascades, flowing from one level to the other, creating ponds and rivers. Each of the 19 buildings differs from the other, creating a feeling of an authentic town, steeping gently to the sea front. The costumes of the staff are stylised to copy traditional Canarian dress.
Most of the 357 rooms have been decorated by
Pascua Ortega , the Madrid-born interior designer, who has also decorated the private houses of the Spanish Royal Family. Pascua Ortega is responsible for the look of the 40 new exclusive villas opened in January 2008. Another large investment is the DQ Spa, to be opened in summer 2008. The investments and developments in the structure as well as the quality of service in the Bahia del Duque have converted the hotel in an important point of reference for the tourism of Tenerife [ [http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g662606-d248457-Reviews-Gran_Melia_Bahia_del_Duque_Resort-Costa_De_Adeje_Tenerife_Canary_Islands.html Gran Melia Bahia del Duque Resort (Costa De Adeje, Tenerife) - Resort Reviews - TripAdvisor ] ] . Apart from setting the trends in hostelry, it is a source of employment for the local community in the South of the Tenerife Island. The well-known people that have stayed in the hotel include:
Michael Schumacher ,Margaret Thatcher ,Brian May ,Mariah Carey ,Luis Miguel ,John Major and others. The Bahia del Duque Hotel belongs to the CIO (Compañia de las Islas Occidentales) Group that since 1850 has led the tobacco industry in the Canary Islands [ [http://www.cio-occidentales.com :: Cio Occidentales :: ] ] until selling the tobacco division (CITA) to the UK based Gallagher Company in 2005. Lately the CIO Group has been positioned in five different business areas, with great emphasis on the tourist and real estate sector.
After a long and successful relationship with the Spanish hotel chain Sol Melia, the hotel has left the Melia Group and joined the DQ Resorts and Hotels.
