Plot
Charan Das (Anil Kapoor) lives with his brother Bhajan Das (Satyen Kappu) and his brother's wife (Tabassum). He wants to become a wrestler and joins a wrestling school (Akhara) run by Mastram Pehelwan (Om Prakash). As per the rules of this school, a man should not marry until the age of 40.
Meanwhile, Bhajan Das is not happy with Charan Das's attitude and asks him to do some useful work. His wife asks Charan Das to get coal at controlled rate from Kallumal (Pankaj Kapoor), a coal merchant. At his shop, Charan Das finds Chameli (Amrita Singh), Kallumal's daughter. He instantly falls in love with her. He now wants to leave the Akhara and hence runs away from Mastram. He hides in Lawyer Harish's (Amjad Khan) home and requests him to make him his guru and save him from Mastram. Harish agrees and asks him the problem. Charan Das explains that he is in love with Chameli. To help out Charan Das with his love problem, Harish types a love letter for him and asks him to hand it over to Chameli and wait for the reply.
On receiving the letter, Chameli also falls in for Charan Das and shows the letter to her best friend Anita (Roopini). Anita has experience with such affairs and makes a plan to test Charan Das. She asks Chameli to fix a meeting with Charan Das in an expensive restaurant. However, at the restaurant she makes out that Charan Das truly loves Chameli.
On the other hand, when Chameli's parents, Kallumal and Champa (Bharati Achrekar) come to know about Chameli's affair with Charan Das, they are against their marriage for the reason that he is from a different caste, and want her to marry someone from their caste. On Chameli's refusal, they lock her in the house. Also, Kallumal calls upon Champa's brother Chhadami Lal (Annu Kapoor), who is a drunkard, to get rid of Charan Das. However, Charan Das comes to know of Kallumal's intentions and with a plan, gets Chaddami arrested.
When Charan Das comes to know from Anita that Chameli is locked in her house, he consults his guru Harish for help. Harish suggests that he should rescue Chameli if they want to marry. Charan Das reaches Kallumal's place at night and escapes along with Chameli to Harish's place where his wife arranges for the marriage.
Meanwhile, Harish goes to Kallumal's home and asks his wife to give some cash and jewellery as this would be required to free Chhadami from jail and asks both of them to reach his home quickly. Bhajan Das also comes to know about Charan Das's marriage and reaches Harish's place along with his wife. Both families protest against the marriage happening out of caste.
Harish plays clever and explains to Kallumal that if this marriage happens, he can win an election with votes of both the castes and also explains Bhajan Das that he would be able to get cement at controlled rate. Both of them understand the benefits and let Charan Das and Chameli marry each other.
