Woodstock Palace

Woodstock Palace

Woodstock Palace was a royal residence in the English town of Woodstock, Oxfordshire. The title of "palace" was first used to refer to it during the 12th century, when it was favoured by King Henry I of England. In about 1120, he created a zoo in the grounds. His grandson, Henry II was also fond of Woodstock, and spent time here with his mistress, Rosamund Clifford. Important events which took place at the palace include:

* The marriage of Mary Plantagenet, daughter of Edward III of England, to John V, Duke of Brittany (1361)
* The marriage of William the Lyon to the English princess, Ermengarde de Beaumont (1186)
* The birth of Edmund, youngest son of King Edward I of England (1301)
* The birth of Edward, the Black Prince (1330)
* Imprisonment of the future Queen Elizabeth I of England (1554)

Woodstock Palace was destroyed during the English Civil War, and Blenheim Palace was later built on the same site.
