Bishop of Exeter .Life
He was the youngest son of John Marshal and Sybil, the sister of the earl of Salisbury, Patrick. This made him the youngest brother of
William Marshall , the advisor to Kings Henry II, Richard I, John and Henry III. Henry probably owed his appointment asDean of York to his brother, and he took office as dean onSeptember 15 1189 . He had only been consecrated a deacon that day. As Dean, he quarreled with his superior,Geoffrey, Archbishop of York , and also served as a royal justice.Barlow "Marshal, Henry (d. 1206)" "Oxford Dictionary of National Biography"]In 1194, probably owing the patronage of his brother, as well
Hubert Walter , who wasArchbishop of Canterbury , he was selected to fill the see of Exeter which had been vacant since 1191. He was nominated aboutFebruary 10 1194 and consecrated aboutMarch 28 1194 atCanterbury by Hubert Walter. While archbishop, he gave to his cathedral chapter and built churches in his diocese. He supposedly finished the construction ofExeter Cathedral .He died in 1206, possibly on November 1.Fryde "Handbook of British Chronology" p. 246] His tomb in Exeter Cathedral is still extant and has the bishop's effigy on it.Bartlett "England Under the Norman and Angevin Kings" p. 599]
