John MacKay (born 1966) is a Scottish newsreader, who joined
STV in 1994 after working atBBC Scotland for several years. He became co-anchor of the STV regional news programme "Scotland Today " in 1997 and now heads the show solely since the re-launch in summer 2006. He has covered many major stories in his career including the Lockerbie bombing, the Dunblane shooting and the opening of the Scottish Parliament.MacKay grew up in the outskirts of
Glasgow inHillington and attendedPenilee Secondary School .MacKay is also the presenter/producer of "
The Real MacKay ", a video blog produced from the Scotland Today newsroom atSTV Central , which has gained cult status.Of Hebridean descent, from the district of
