Hryniewiecki

Hryniewiecki

Hryniewiecki is the surname of two noble Polish families. The name means "Descendant of Hrynie" with the suffix "wiecki", which could mean two things: either 1) "to be awoken, watchful" or 2) from the Latin translation, and assuming it derived from a pet form of "Grzegorz", or "gregis", meaning "herd" or "flock" (from the Christian image of the Good Shepherd).

The ancestral seat of the family was established in 1632 in the city of Bielz.

Notable family members

Pawel Hryniewiecki was a descendant of this family and vice-regent of Brans and took part in the election of King Stanisław August Poniatowski. As a reward he was unanimously elected Chamberlain of Bielz. He served as rector of the University of Lwów. For 41 years Pawel was married to countess Anna Gerzanych, from an old Hungarian family. He died in 1818 after 35 years as a professor.

Family crest

:"An azure blazon with sword proper in pale, point in base, garnished":"From a crowned helmet, a dragon, or flaming gules, the flames charged with the charges of the shield."

Translation: The family crest has a blue central shield with a vertical sword, point down, flanked by two yellow crescents facing opposite directions. A medieval helmet bearing a crown sits atop the shield, with a fire breathing dragon (facing left from the bearer's point of view) perched on top of the crown. Blue and yellow foliage surrounds the shield and flanks the helmet.
