Biebern is a small village in the district (county) of Rhein-Hunsrück in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is located about 7 km. west of the district seat of Simmern, and about 70 km west of the state capital of Mainz.

Attractions

Biebern two landmarks are its two churches, one catholic, one protestant. The two parishes have peacefully coexisted since 1770.

The black cross symbolizes the former Monastery of Fulda, the two churches are a reminder of the two local churches and the balance symbolizes the Augustinian Monastery at Ravengiersburg.

Geography

Biebern lies in a shallow valley of the Hunsrück hills called Biebertal. The Bieberbach, a small stream, runs through it to the south where it flows into the Nahe River. The surrounding land is a mixture of farm, field and forest.

History

Biebern was first mentioned as Biberahu in a record of the Monastery of Fulda in 754. In the 11th century Biebern came into the possession of the Ravengiersburg Monastery. In 1566 it was obtained by Duke Georg von Simmern and became a part of the Duchy of Palatinate-Simmern.

In 1794 French troops occupied the area of the Rhine west of the river. In 1814 the Congress of Vienna gave the area to Prussia.

Since 1947, Biebern has been part of the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
