Howard Civian Birndorf is a
biotechnology entrepreneur and one of the founders of the biotech industry inSan Diego, California . Along with formerUniversity of California professor and current venture capitalistIvor Royston , Birndorf founded San Diego's first biotech in 1978, themonoclonal antibody company Hybritech. The company was subsequently bought byEli Lily in 1985, and Birndorf went on to found a number of other successful companies includingGen-Probe ,IDEC Pharmaceuticals (which merged withBiogen to form Biogen-Idec), and Ligand. Birndorf was also involved in the formation of Gensia (Sicor), was a founding investor of Kiyon, and was a founding Director ofNeurocrine Biosciences . Birndorf is currently Chairman of the Board and founding Director ofFasTraQ , Chairman ofHA Cell Technology and Chairman ofOy Jurilab , a Finnishgenomics company. He is a founder and co-chair of the Coalition for 21st Century Medicine and is founder, Chairman and CEO ofNanogen, Inc .Birndorf received his B.A. in
Biology fromOakland University , an M.S. inBiochemistry fromWayne State University , and has received honorary Doctor of Science degrees from Oakland University and Wayne State University.
