- Season of the Emergence
The Season of the Emergence (Egyptian "prt"), or Peret [ Nigel C. Strudwick, "Texts from the Pyramid Age", SBL 2005, p.103] , etc, was the second or
Winter season of the ancientEgyptian calendar (running from "roughly mid-November to mid-March." [David P. Silverman, Ancient Egypt, Duncan Baird Publishers, London 1997. p.93] ), following theSeason of the Inundation . It received its name because this was the period when theNile flood waters receded, and allowed the Egyptians to plant their fields. [ [http://www.let.leidenuniv.nl/saqqara/Egyptology/Glossary/Inundation.html Leiden University] ]The ancient Egyptians used this name in both their lunar and their civil calendars. The months of the lunar calendar are roughly equivalent to the period from the middle of November to the middle of March. Since the civil calendar moved through the seasons over time, losing about one day every four years, this season does not continuously match any part of the modern calendar; it consists of the four 30-day months of Tybi, Mechir, Phamenoth, and Pharmuthi.
It is followed by the
Season of the Harvest or Shemu.References
